Greetings from Albuquerque, NM where it is a balmy 36 degrees at 9 am, but we wanted to share our weather experience from Monday and Tuesday. While visiting with friends near Tulsa OK, and watching the news, we knew a "Polar Air Invasion" was on its way.
We set out Monday morning, destination Amarillo Texas, knowing we were not going to be ahead of it, but at least the farther west we were the better the weather was looking. We knew we needed to be plugged into electricity this night! What we were not expecting was the 20-30 mph winds we had all day which made driving the Lazy Daze across I-40 feel like riding a bucking bronco! Finally at 5pm we pulled off the road just east of Amarillo and after checking out 4 power poles found one we felt safe to connect our electrical cord. Thank goodness!! We knew our backup was a Wave heater that runs off propane.
At 5pm the outside temperature was 81 degrees. At 5:54pm we went out and watched a beautiful sunset. Within minutes the wind picked up and the temperature started to fall pretty dramatically. By 8:00pm the same thermometer read 45 degrees with sustained winds now blowing at the reported 25-30 mph and gusts of 50mph. We closed all the vents, put down the TV antenna and rode out the night quite comfortably with flannel sheets and under a down comforter. At 4am the outside temperature was 22 degrees, inside was 42 (with our ceramic heater set to come on every other hour) and the wind was still blowing!
By 7:30am Tuesday, the outside temperature was 18 degrees with a wind chill of 6 degrees according to the Weather Channel. The wind had died down to about 15 mph and we knew we could hit the road and run away from this scary stuff! An adventure we knew we were prepared for and do not want to repeat again!
